Ayahuasca from Preparation to the Ceremonies

The Ancient Process of Brewing Ayahuasca

Preparing the Ayahuasca brew reflects centuries of Amazonian tradition and spiritual wisdom. At Takinuna Healing Center, we follow a series of carefully curated steps to ensure the purity, potency, and integrity of this profound medicine. Our participants join us in the preparation, actively engaging in making the Ayahuasca they will drink during their retreat. This guide outlines each phase of our preparation, from the selection of plants to the final brewing, highlighting our commitment to preserving the authenticity and healing power of Ayahuasca.

The Preparation Of Our Ayahuasca

The meticulous process of preparing Ayahuasca involves a profound connection with nature and the spirit of the plants. We prepare Ayahuasca onsite at our Centre. We do not purchase pre-brewed Ayahuasca; instead, we honour the traditional method of preparation within our sacred space. At the start of your retreat, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in brewing the Ayahuasca you’ll consume during ceremonies. This ensures clarity about what you’re ingesting and offers insight into ancient practices of brewing plants over a traditional wood fire.

  • We clean vine segments of moss or extraneous plant matter to ensure purity.
  • This involves washing the segments or scraping the bark with a knife, ensuring that only the Ayahuasca vine is used in the brew.
  • Shamans typically fast during the making and brewing of Ayahuasca because they believe it enhances the potency and quality of the brew.
  • We mash cleaned vine segments with a wooden hammer to break them into thinner strands.
  • Mashing opens up the vines, allowing for enhanced extraction of the medicinal essence.
  • Curanderos may sing Icaros during this process to communicate intentions with the spirit of the vine.
  • We combine the mashed vine segments with Chacruna leaves and add water to cover the plant material.
  • The pot is placed over a fire and brought to a boil, initiating the extraction process.
  • Cooking times and temperatures may vary, but the goal is to reduce water while absorbing the medicinal essences.
  • The cooking process, which typically takes approximately 10-12 hours, involves two rounds of boiling. After the first boiling, we add more water and repeat the process.
  • Each reduction enhances the brew by extracting more medicine and producing liquid for the final concentration.
  • After the boiling is completed, only the liquid remains, which is further reduced over the fire.
  • Curanderos carefully monitor this process to achieve the desired strength for each dose.

The Ayahuasca Ceremony

At Takinuna Healing Center, our commitment is centered on healing, guiding, and teaching traditional Amazonian medicine through plant medicine ceremonies and medicinal plant treatments. Here’s an insight into the Ayahuasca journey as experienced in our ceremonies.

Initial Sensations & Emotions

Participants often feel a mix of excitement and nervousness which is natural. The distinct taste of the medicine may bring about a warming sensation, sometimes leading to perspiration. A mild, transient stomach sensation can also occur.

Physical and Mental Shifts & Altered Perceptions

Within minutes of consuming Ayahuasca, thoughts may accelerate and become scattered. An increased heart rate and tingling sensations in various parts of the body, including the head, are common. Additionally, heightened sensory perception can be experienced, occasionally accompanied by an inner ‘hum’ indicating increased brain activity. Visual acuity may sharpen, revealing vibrant colors and patterns not seen in the ordinary state. Consciousness may shift into a trance-like state, characterized by symbolic visuals, dreamlike sequences, and kaleidoscopic images.

Peak Experience

The peak of the trance often brings potent visions, offering profound insights and clarity. Communication with spirit guides or entities may occur, imparting valuable information. As the peak recedes, visions fade, giving way to a sense of peace and physical fatigue. Even after the visual intensity fades, a subtle connection to the spiritual realm may persist. Lastly, It is important to dedicate time to sleep, rest, and recover following a ceremony.

While this outlines a typical Ayahuasca experience, individual responses may vary.

  • Lack of Sensation: Some participants may experience little or no effects, possibly due to psychological resistance. It’s important to understand that healing can occur even without visions.
  • Intense Visions: For others, visions may be vivid and intense, potentially causing emotional overwhelm.
  • Enhancing Your Journey: Cultivate a positive mindset by reflecting on gratitude, love, and the wonders of nature. Develop trust in Ayahuasca’s healing potential and the guidance of the ceremony. Embrace your fears without letting them paralyze you, as fear can obstruct the process. By understanding and preparing for these various stages, participants can approach their Ayahuasca journey with greater confidence and openness.

The Ayahuasca journey encompasses a spectrum of experiences, from deep joy to potential challenges. The key lies in nurturing a positive outlook, trusting the process, and recognizing the connection to your inner divine nature. As you prepare to embark on this journey, let love, faith, and courage guide your exploration of the extraordinary realms within.
